| MARTIN
N’TERRY |
finds
that in his homeland
of Burkina Faso
reggae spans the
generation gap
- because it is
music with a message
and the theme
of his music is
one of hope and
about the beauty
of being African.
Martin is currently
putting the finishing
touches on his
third C.D. which
he describes as
having a Jamaican
beat, African
rhythms, and American
style horns.

| DAARA-J |
Formed
in 1997, Senegalese
rappers Daara
J were influenced
by local heroes
Positive Black
Soul but looked
to bring other
musical influences
to their hip-hop
sound. Members
N'Dango D, Aladji
Man, and Faada
Freddy started
out by rapping
over any instrumental
versions of America
or French rap
they could find
and adding their
own percussion
over the tracks.
Eventually they
got a drum machine,
but with only
a drum machine,
one of the members
would have to
"sing"
all the instruments.
It brought a great
sense of melody
to the group,
which allowed
them to incorporate
the sounds of
their beloved
reggae, funk,
and Cuban music
into their hip-hop.
Reggae great Mad
Professor produced
their 1998 self-titled
debut which was
followed a year
later by Xalima.
The Declic label
released both
records, but 2003
marked a switch
to the Wrasse
label with the
Boomerang album.

 |
| BEETROOT |
| Beetroot
was founded by
Fiona Wilkes (vocals),
Jason Mills (drums),
and Marivaldo
Dos Santos (percussion),
who met as members
of the globally
acclaimed percussion
performance troupe
STOMP. Wilkes
has been with
STOMP since its
original inception
in Brighton, England,
and Mills and
Dos Santos joined
the cast a few
years later when
the show relocated
to NYC. Through
STOMP's success,
the three have
toured in over
25 countries on
6 continents,
worked on Quincy
Jones’ grammy
nominated album
Juke Joint, and
appeared in the
Oscar-nominated
short film |
|
 |
|
Brooms.
The unique rhythmic sensibilities
these three honed after years
of banging out stripped-down
beats together around the
world is what Beetroot is
all about. Mills, from the
sticks of Appalachian Virginia,
and Dos Santos, from Bahia,
Brazil, combine the far-flung
worlds of Stax-era southern
soul drums and Afro-Brazilian
percussion to create their
own backbeat vocabulary. Their
dirty, driving tempo contrasts
sharply with Wilkes’
sweet, smoky vocals, steeped
in a lifetime of steel bands,
soca, and Lovers Rock reggae
ballads in the massive West
Indian community of Leeds,
England. This juxtaposition
of musical ingredients from
different genres and continents
is the foundation of the Beetroot
sound. www.beatrootnyc.com

| SIREN
DANCE COMPANY |
| Mambo,
artistic director
of the SIREN DANCE
COMPANY was introduced
to dance as a
young girl in
her father's compound.
Her first dance
was to the sound
of her father's
wooden homemade
xylophone and
her uncle's calculated
pounds of hollowed
wooden drumbeats
in the swamps
of Ekea, Yaounde
- Cameroon's Capital.
Her Journey brought
her to the Haitians
of Flatbush who
jittered at the
thought of a father
naming his daughter
"guider of
the spirits".
Born to a Baptist
preacher and a
nurse in the heart
spirits of the
Makeza's forest
of the Littoral
Province in Cameroon,
reawaken by the
Whispers of despair
in South Dallas
and immersed in
the emotions of
the spirits of
the underground
railroad riders
of Brooklyn. Her
journey sometimes
seems like the
spirits are guiding
her to a path. |
